How to Make Your Eyebrow Tint Last Longer: 7 Aftercare Tips

August 31, 20266 min read

Eyebrow tint fades faster or slower depending almost entirely on aftercare — not luck. The habits in the first 24–48 hours after your appointment, plus a few ongoing routines, make the biggest difference in how many weeks you get out of a single tint. Here's exactly what to do.

Why Tint Fades Faster for Some People

Tint sits on the surface of the hair shaft rather than penetrating it permanently, which means anything that strips, exfoliates, or breaks down that surface layer will fade it faster. The most common culprits: oil-based cleansers and makeup removers, exfoliating acids and retinol used near the brow, chlorine and sun exposure, and simply touching or rubbing the brow area frequently.

1. Wait Before Washing Your Face

Avoid getting the brow area wet for at least 12–24 hours after tinting. This gives the tint time to fully set into the hair.

2. Skip Oil-Based Cleansers and Makeup Removers Near the Brows

Oil is one of the fastest ways to strip tint. If your cleansing routine includes an oil cleanser or micellar water, use a cotton swab to clean around (not directly over) the brow area, or switch to a gentle, oil-free formula for the first week.

3. Avoid Retinol and Exfoliating Acids Near the Brow Line

Retinol, glycolic acid, and salicylic acid all work by encouraging skin (and surface pigment) turnover — which is exactly what you don't want on freshly tinted brows. Apply these products carefully around, not on, the brow area, or pause use in that zone for the first several days.

4. Be Mindful of Sun Exposure

UV exposure breaks down tint pigment over time, similar to how it fades hair color. If you know you have sun-heavy days ahead, a light brow gel or protective balm can help minimize fading.

5. Limit Chlorine and Saltwater Exposure Early On

Swimming pools and ocean water can accelerate fading, especially in the first week post-tint. If a pool day is unavoidable, this isn't a reason to skip it — just know the tint may fade a bit faster than expected.

6. Don't Over-Exfoliate the Brow Area

General facial exfoliation is fine, but be gentle and deliberate around the brows specifically — repeated scrubbing removes surface tint along with dead skin.

7. Book on a Consistent Cycle

Tint naturally fades over 3–6 weeks regardless of aftercare. Rather than waiting until it's fully gone, many clients get the most consistent results by rebooking every 3–4 weeks, refreshing color before it visibly fades rather than after.
