Threading vs. Waxing: Which Is Actually Better?

November 28, 20246 min read

One of the most common questions we hear at Queen Threading is: Should I get my eyebrows threaded or waxed? Both methods have their merits, but as threading specialists with over a decade of experience, we're here to give you an honest comparison.

How Threading Works

Threading uses a thin cotton thread that's twisted and rolled over the skin to pluck hair at the follicle level. This ancient technique originated in South Asia and the Middle East and has been refined over centuries. At Queen Threading, our artists use a precision threading technique that removes hair with incredible accuracy.

How Waxing Works

Waxing involves applying warm or cold wax to the skin and removing it quickly, pulling hairs out from the root. It's effective for larger areas but can be harsh on delicate facial skin.

The Key Differences

Precision: Threading wins hands down. The thread can target individual hairs, creating sharper, more defined brow shapes. Waxing removes hair in sections, making it harder to achieve precise lines.

Skin Sensitivity: Threading is far gentler. No chemicals, no heat — just a cotton thread. This makes it ideal for sensitive skin, rosacea, or acne-prone skin. Waxing can cause redness, burns, and irritation.

Pain Level: Most clients find threading less painful than waxing. The sensation is a quick pinch rather than a rip.

Results: Both methods last 2-4 weeks, but threading tends to give a cleaner finish with less redness afterward.

Side-by-Side Comparison Table

Precision — Threading: individual hairs, sharp defined edges. Waxing: removes hair in sections.

Pain — Threading: quick pinch, no skin pulling. Waxing: sharper sting, can lift skin.

Sensitive skin — Threading: chemical-free and heat-free, safe with retinol users, rosacea and acne-prone skin. Waxing: risk of redness, lifting and burns.

How long it lasts — Threading: 2–4 weeks. Waxing: 2–4 weeks (slightly longer on coarse hair).

Best for — Threading: brows, upper lip, chin, full face. Waxing: legs, arms, underarms, bikini and Brazilian.

Cost at Queen Threading — Eyebrow threading from $17 (cleanup) and $22 (full shape); eyebrow tint + shape $65; body waxing priced per area.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose threading if you want maximum precision on the face, have sensitive or reactive skin, use retinol or acids, or want zero chemicals near your eyes. Choose waxing if you're treating larger body areas where speed matters more than millimetre precision. Many of our Escondido clients do both — threading above the neck, waxing below it.

Our Expert Recommendation

For eyebrows, threading is the superior choice. The precision, gentleness, and clean results make it the preferred method for professional brow shaping. That said, waxing is great for larger body areas — and we offer both at Queen Threading!
